There was an orchard in the house I grew up as a child.
I remember candidly the flowers in spring, the freshness of the trees’ shadow in the summer, its fruits and how it would attract birds, ants and worms. I spent a lot of time outside, playing with my dog “Carriça”, just being, as children allow themselves to.
In particular, I remember the cherry tree with deep fondness. I used to climb it, sit on the branches and eat cherries directly from the tree. They remain my favourite fruit.
One day, my parents decided to renovate the house.
We moved to the city for a while.
The trees were chopped. The cherry tree was gone.
I remember feeling hurt when I saw it was missing. This was my first experience with loss and until recently (now a middle-aged adult) I didn’t understand how much it hurt me. And, for someone who feels a lot of pleasure in thinking and the “examined life”, it first came off as a surprise.
I relearned how important the orchard was for me by living in another orchard during the summer of 2020, the first after starting to study Philosophy.
Hence, essays in the orchard. At least until I don’t plant another live orchard where I (and others) can enjoy its shadow and fruits, I will my plant my idea-seeds here.
A digital garden, a concept I heard from a friend and read about through Maggie Appleton. Some will grow to spouts or even trees, others will not. Anyway, you are welcome to my **”Casa no Campo”**.
I invite you to sit here with me.
Song by Elis Regina:
Eu quero uma casa no campo
Onde eu possa compor muitos rocks rurais
E tenha somente a certeza
Dos amigos do peito e nada mais
Eu quero uma casa no campo
Onde eu possa ficar no tamanho da paz
E tenha somente a certeza
Dos limites do corpo e nada mais
Eu quero carneiros e cabras
Pastando solenes no meu jardim
Eu quero o silêncio das línguas cansadas
Eu quero a esperança de óculos
E meu filho de cuca legal
Eu quero plantar e colher com a mão a pimenta e o sal
Eu quero uma casa no campo
Do tamanho ideal, pau a pique e sapé
Onde eu possa plantar meus amigos
Meus discos e livros e nada mais
Onde eu possa plantar meus amigos
Meus discos, meus livros e nada mais
Onde eu possa plantar meus amigos
Meus discos e livros e nada mais
**How I may grow this note:**
1) ask my mom for a picture of the orchard
2) write about attachment to the land
